Our wonderful volunteers make the BRIGHT Run possible. Many of them volunteer at the event itself; others participate year-round in a variety of roles. We couldn’t do it without them all!
Meet Wyatt Turcott, 17, who has been a BRIGHT Run volunteer since the age of 14.
Wyatt heard about the BRIGHT Run through his mom, Janeen Schaeffer, a medical radiation technologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Both Wyatt’s mom and his younger sister have also volunteered with the BRIGHT Run.
A student at Sherwood Secondary School in Hamilton, Wyatt also works at Freshco.
Why/how did you originally get involved with BRIGHT Run?
Honestly, I needed volunteer hours for my school to graduate and I thought it was a good cause to volunteer for.
What kinds of volunteer duties did you perform?
I started out by asking to put flyers up, after that I helped sort parking spaces for people parking their cars to bus to the event at the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. I also helped with fundraising through a bake sale and participated in public outreach/advertising at festivals.
How do you feel about your BRIGHT Run volunteer experience?
I had a pretty good time with it. I met some interesting people, especially some of the organizers such as Nancy McMillan. Even though I was able to get all my hours for high school, I’d probably go back to volunteer when it comes back around again.
How would you describe your BRIGHT Run experience to a Grade 9 student who is looking for volunteer hours?
It’s a fairly simple and annual work if you’re looking for some quick hours, but if you’re looking for more consistent hours, the organizers can definitely find lots for you to do.
