For the third year, Mac Athletes Care launched Think Pink week in support of the BRIGHT Run.
Megh Rathod, a varsity rugby flanker and Integrated Sciences student, led the campaign, despite restrictions due to COVID-19.
“It was definitely an unusual year,” he said. “We tried our best to stay on-course this year and explore alternatives.”
Mac Athletes Care is a program for student-athletes that uses sport as a tool to teach valuable life lessons through involvement in, and contributions to, the community.
In the past, Think Pink week has been very sociable, including lobby sales and games at the David Braley Athletic Centre, as well as varsity games with a pink theme.
Clearly, that wasn’t possible this year. So, Megh and his team launched a sale of Marauders Fight Together T-shirts and face masks through the Campus Store, and took to Instagram with a week-long awareness campaign.
The robust and colourful campaign included video posts from Mac athletes who have been touched by breast cancer, along with one by Mac alumnus Steve Ewoniak, the BRIGHT Run 2020 survivor spokesperson.
In addition, there were posts covering the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, risk factors, screening and community resources.
There is not yet a tally of the funds raised for the BRIGHT Run through merchandise sales and donations.
