Hello BRIGHT Run Family,
We’re getting close to the end of the first quarter of 2025.
We are probably noticing that the world around us is changing at a very fast pace.
While change is part of our existence, we do value constants and consistencies.
We often present change or variation with the help of constants, for example, by comparing change with things that stay constant. Examples of universal constants are speed of light and the force of gravity.
Consistency is also important, such as the seasonal changes that we expect every year.
Change, constants, consistencies, and their delicate balance shape our personal and professional lives. At times, we are the ones who introduce change and at other times, we accept change.
Monitoring change is important so that necessary measures can be taken to mitigate its effect or to get used to it. Also, change can occur quickly or can take longer to manifest itself.
As a researcher in Artificial Intelligence (AI), I read about or experience promising changes daily. However, I think only a very small proportion of the changes will be sustainable, while some will be replaced by other changes.
This reminds me of a concept that I read during my PhD called Just Noticeable Difference (JND). To put it simply, JND is the smallest change in something that a person can notice. Imagine you’re listening to music, and the volume goes up just a tiny bit. JND is the smallest volume increase when you realize it’s louder. Or if you’re holding a bag, it’s the lightest weight you can add to it before you feel that it’s heavier.
The world around us is changing and, probably, JND related to many changes will take time to happen. At that point, we will recognize that a change has occurred.
I hope we will hold on to our good qualities, such as compassion and love, as constants that we consistently apply in our lives.
Stay well!
Best,
Ashirbani
