Five BRIGHT Questions

For our volunteer event day photographers

Travis Singleton

Background information:

Travis, 52, operates 20two19, a photography/videography company.

Why/how did you originally get involved with BRIGHT Run?

My wife, Susan, was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2016, and Kathie Ward was her oncology nurse, who of course introduced us to event chair Nancy McMillan and BRIGHT Run. We participated that first year, and as I’m an avid photographer, I took photos and shared them with the event. I’ve been asked back every year since, except the three years (2017-2019) we were not in Ontario.

What kinds of pictures are you looking for on event day?

I’m always looking for people who stand out and other scenes, and I capture a lot of non-people photos as well.

Do you have a favourite photo among those you have shot on event day?

Event day is great. I also love to photograph the setup by all the volunteers, the day before BRIGHT Run. These are truly special moments that I love to capture. Everyone is working so hard to make everything come together.

How would you describe your BRIGHT Run experience to people considering volunteering with BRIGHT Run?

The BRIGHT Run experience is so inclusive. I’d say it’s a small family, but when you come out to the event, you’ll see the family is not so small! I don’t have breast cancer, but I’ve watched my wife go through it and it’s amazing to see a community that can come together and become fast friends with people who were strangers just moments before.

If you could summarize your BRIGHT Run experience in one word, what would it be?

Family.
