Hello BRIGHT Run Family,
Happy New Year!
Hope you had a nice holiday season.
While I focus on breast cancer research, as a non-clinician (you know I am an engineer) working in oncology-related research and Artificial Intelligence (AI), I keep learning about cancer.
(Editor’s note: A clinician is a healthcare professional who works directly with patients.)
In a newly-published work, my students reviewed research papers related to the development and evaluation of large- language models (the engine behind the AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT) in oncology.
A lot of the studies we reviewed focused on breast cancer. We found that the end-users of the models included clinicians, trainees, patients, and researchers.
Though the models were used for diverse purposes, there remains a lot of scope to improve them. This includes more generalized applicability of the models, reducing bias and subjectivity, and developing more nuanced approaches to evaluate their performance. You can find our paper here: Development and evaluation of large-language models (LLMs) for oncology: A scoping review | PLOS Digital Health.
As you are aware, improvements in AI technology are emerging fast. It is likely the newer models have already mitigated some of the limitations I mentioned.
After enjoying some quality time with family and friends in India, I’m ready for a fresh start and excited to continue advancing the projects I’m collaborating on. I’m also looking forward to exploring new opportunities inspired by ongoing technological progress.
With good wishes and BRIGHT hopes,
Best,
Ashirbani
