“BRIGHT Run enables growth in a caring and purposeful way!”
Why/how did you originally get involved with BRIGHT Run?
Breast cancer isn’t a statistic to me – it’s personal as I have witnessed the fight for survival first-hand with my grandmother and several aunts. Community service has always been a central part of my family and BRIGHT Run is at the core of it. I started off small getting involved in bake sales and fundraising, but in the last four years, I took on the role of Kids Zone Lead, a role that has been challenging and fulfilling!
How would you describe your BRIGHT Run experience(s) to someone who is considering volunteering with us?
Volunteering for the BRIGHT run has been both rewarding and memorable. Our team, Cancer Busters, has raised over $60,000 to date! This experience has enabled me to canvas for funds, while running the Kids Zone where I manage a team of up to 10 volunteers. The Kids Zone brings levity to families afflicted by breast cancer, all while enabling important programs at the hospital.
Summarize BRIGHT Run volunteering in one word.
COMMUNITY!
What is your most memorable BRIGHT Run volunteer moment?
My most memorable volunteer moment was this past September when multiple parents thanked our volunteers at the Kids Zone for being well-organized and kid-focused! That recognition for the team represents the diverse experience, hard work and dedication of each of our volunteers.
What makes the BRIGHT Run volunteer experience special?
BRIGHT Run is a special organization that genuinely cares about their volunteers and community overall. My experience with BRIGHT has taught me that leading with purpose about something you care about naturally leads to growth and results. I’ve learned to budget, plan and adapt to challenges in the moment, all with access to the BRIGHT Run executive team. This experience has armed me with life skills that will prepare me for university but also my future volunteer and career roles. To sum it up, BRIGHT Run enables growth in a caring and purposeful way!
