“Every year seeing participants cross the finish line is definitely unforgettable. In large part because for each participant, that final step is a victory, as well as a celebration.”

Why/how did you originally get involved with the BRIGHT Run?
It was over 12 years ago, through Nancy McMillan and Kathy Ward, whom I met while working for the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. Having just returned to Canada after living abroad, it was a chance to contribute to a great cause, meet people, and for my kids to get involved with their community.
How would you describe your BRIGHT Run experience(s) to someone who is considering volunteering with us?
It might seem cliché, but volunteering for BRIGHT “enriches” you. You meet a wonderful group of volunteers and participants.
It’s “the pebble in the lake” analogy. Your role, no matter how small it might seem to you, adds to the success of event, which in turn supports the incredible researchers, practitioners and healthcare professionals who care for breast cancer patients from across our region. Patients who are our family, friends, and neighbors.
Summarize BRIGHT Run volunteering in one word.
Impactful.
What is your most memorable BRIGHT Run volunteer moment?
I honestly can’t remember one that outshines any other. Every year seeing participants cross the finish line is definitely unforgettable. In large part because for each participant, that final step is a victory, as well as a celebration.
What makes the BRIGHT Run volunteer experience special?
I began volunteering in my teens, and over the past 40 years have volunteered with PTAs, environmental, science \, and social organizations. What makes the BRIGHT Run team special is that they are some of the most friendly, enthusiastic, and dedicated people I have ever met. It is just fabulous to work with them.
