Student Research Day

This month, Dr. Ashirbani Saha writes about Student Research Day, an annual event in the McMaster University Department of Oncology. Several of her students were among the presenters.

Hello BRIGHT Run Family,

Hope you are doing well and enjoying the summer.

With seasonal flowers, lush green, baby birds, excitement for the soccer world cup and my mom visiting us, this summer has been turning out to be a very special one.

Every summer, the Department of Oncology organizes the Student Research Day (SRD). This year marked the 21st SRD in June. Some of my students presented their progress on several projects – novel breast imaging analysis using advanced AI models for imaging; breast cancer-related report and note analysis using advanced AI models for text analysis; and breast cancer-related published literature screening based on AI platforms.

Attached is a photo of the students and the trainees who participated in the event. During their projects, they gained valuable research experience from the supervision and guidance of my clinician/methodologist collaborators, Drs. Kulkarni (radiology), Levine (medical oncology), and Yao (health research methodology). The research teams for each of those projects have more trainees and experts; they all contributed to the research that was presented. That’s teamwork!

As well, I completed my five years in McMaster University as the BRIGHT Run Learning Health System Chair in June. Thank you for your enormous support. Two of the projects mentioned above used data from the Learning Health System at Hamilton Health Sciences to form the research questions and for analysis. One of the projects was supported by the BRIGHT Run funding administered by the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation.

I feel happy to perform research based on your continuous support.

There just two months between now and our 19th annual BRIGHT Run!!!

Stay well and take care.

Best,

Ashirbani

Dr. Ashirbani Saha is the first holder of the BRIGHT Run Breast Cancer Learning Health System Chair, a permanent research position established by the BRIGHT Run in partnership with McMaster University.
